Photosynthesis
Subject: Biology Topic: Photosynthesis Grades: Grades 6–9
One leaf, four arrows and the equation printed large enough to read from the back row. Students who cannot yet write the equation from memory can read it off the wall until they can.
Learning purpose
Students use the display to recall the word and symbol equations for photosynthesis and to name what goes into a leaf and what comes out of it.
Students will be able to:
- State the word equation for photosynthesis
- Name the two raw materials, the energy source and the two products
- Explain where in a plant cell photosynthesis happens and why leaves are green
Choose your version
Costs are worked out from what each version actually consumes — paper, ink, card, laminating and backing. Enter your own prices below and all three update.
Your print pack
Every count below updates with the version, the printing and the paper size you choose.
Black and white prints as clean line art rather than a greyed-out copy of the colour version, so the class can colour it in. The preview above changes with this setting.

What is in the pack
Title letters — PHOTOSYNTHESIS — 4 sheets, black and white
P · H · O · T · O · S · and 8 more
Leaf, sun and arrows — 3 sheets, colour
Leaf with veins, tiled across two sheets · Sun · Four labelled arrows
Equation strips — 2 sheets, black and white
carbon dioxide + water + light energy → glucose + oxygen · 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Each equation tiles across two sheets so the text stays large.
Input and output labels — 1 sheet, black and white
carbon dioxide (CO₂) · water (H₂O) · light energy · glucose · oxygen (O₂) · chlorophyll
Fact cards — 2 sheets, colour
Photosynthesis happens in the chloroplasts, which is where chlorophyll is. · Chlorophyll reflects green light, which is why leaves look green. · Water arrives from the roots through the xylem. · Carbon dioxide enters through tiny holes on the underside of the leaf called stomata. · Glucose is used for respiration, stored as starch, or built into cellulose. · Oxygen leaves through the same stomata that let carbon dioxide in. · and 2 more
Leaf border strip — 1 sheet, colour
Repeating leaf-and-vein strip
Question of the week cards — 1 sheet, black and white
Why does a plant kept in a dark cupboard turn pale? · Where exactly does the carbon in a tree trunk come from? · A leaf is covered in petroleum jelly on its underside. What happens, and why? · Two plants, same light, one in a sealed jar. Which grows more, and why?

How to build this board
Estimated assembly time: about 25–35 minutes.
Step 1 — Prepare the background
Cover the board in pale blue or white backing paper. A pale background keeps the green leaf readable from a distance.
Step 2 — Add the title
Cut out PHOTOSYNTHESIS and run it across the top. Fourteen letters is a long title — check it fits before you staple the first one.
Step 3 — Fix the leaf in the centre
Tape the two leaf sheets together at the back and centre the leaf, leaving room either side for the arrows.
Step 4 — Add the sun and the light arrow
Put the sun above and to the left of the leaf and run the light-energy arrow down towards it.
Step 5 — Add the inputs and outputs
Carbon dioxide and water arrows point into the leaf from the left. Oxygen and glucose arrows point out to the right. Keep all four arrows the same length.
Step 6 — Lay the equation strip
Tape the word equation across the bottom, and the symbol equation directly beneath it, aligned at the arrow.
Step 7 — Finish the border
Run the leaf border around the outside and pin the fact cards down one side.

Board size calculator
Enter your own board and see how tall to print the title and how much backing paper to buy.
- Board size
- 180 × 120 cm (2.16 m²)
- Title letter height
- about 15.6 cm
- Letters across
- 12 per row, 2 rows
- Sheets for the title
- 14
- Main diagram width
- about 61 cm
- Backing paper
- about 49 sheets
Recommended paper: A4.
- The title will not fit on one line — plan for 2 rows of letters.
- At this size a roll of bulletin-board paper is cheaper than sheets of backing paper.
