  1. 0–5 min
    Hook - the shrinking Moon

    Show four photographs of the Moon taken a week apart. Ask: what changed, and what stayed the same? Collect answers without correcting any of them yet.

  2. 5–12 min
    Surface prior ideas

    Students draw what they think is happening in their notebooks. Circulate and look for the common misconception that Earth's shadow falls on the Moon - you will return to it at minute 30.

  3. 12–28 min
    Hands-on model

    Darken the room and switch on the lamp. Each student holds their foam ball at arm's length and slowly turns a full circle, watching the lit part of the ball change. Pause them at each quarter turn to name what they see.

  4. 28–36 min
    Make the pattern explicit

    Students sequence the eight phase cards, then label waxing and waning. Revisit the shadow misconception directly: ask what would need to be true for Earth's shadow to cause phases, and why we would then see it every month.

  5. 36–43 min
    Record and explain

    Students complete the recording sheet, writing one sentence explaining the pattern in their own words using the words orbit, reflect, and phase.

  6. 43–45 min
    Exit ticket

    Collect the exit ticket at the door as students leave.

  • Give the role of lamp monitor during the model so movement is purposeful, not disruptive
  • Break the recording sheet into two halves collected separately at minutes 36 and 43
  • Say the next instruction only after eye contact, and keep each to one step

  • Supply phase cards with the picture and the word together; never the word alone
  • Accept a labelled diagram in place of the written sentence
  • Pre-teach orbit, reflect, and phase with the foam ball before the whole-class activity

Visual impairment

  • Provide a tactile Moon phase board with raised lit and unlit sections
  • Pair with a partner who narrates the changing light aloud during the model
  • Enlarge the recording sheet to A3 with high-contrast printing

Gifted and Talented

  • Ask why we do not get an eclipse every single month, then have them test it with the model
  • Challenge them to predict the phase on their next birthday using a lunar calendar
