Our Amazing Work

Writing the caption makes a student say what they are proud of and why, which is a short piece of reflective writing disguised as a display job.

Students will be able to:

• Explain in one sentence what they did well in a piece of work
• Give and receive specific praise about work rather than about a person

Black and white prints as clean line art rather than a greyed-out copy of the colour version, so the class can colour it in. The preview above changes with this setting.

Change the title and the printable letters regenerate to match it.

   Step 1 — Prepare the background

   Cover the board in a plain, light colour. Student work is the only thing on this board that should attract the eye.

   Step 2 — Add the title

   Run OUR AMAZING WORK across the top, or your own heading from the customise panel.

   Step 3 — Mark the grid before you fix anything

   Pencil twelve evenly spaced rectangles, three rows of four. An uneven grid is what makes a work display look untidy however good the work is.

   Step 4 — Fix the corner pieces

   Four corners per rectangle. Corners rather than a full frame means you can change the work without rebuilding the board.

   Step 5 — Add the caption strips

   One strip directly beneath each frame, all at the same distance. Leave them blank — the students fill them in.

   Step 6 — Put up the first pieces of work

   Slide each piece under its corners. Let students place their own work if they can reach.

   Step 7 — Finish with the prompt strip and border

   Prompt strip along the bottom where students stand to write, then the star border around the outside.

What students do

1. Choose a piece of work you are proud of.
2. Slide it under the four corners of an empty frame.
3. Fill in the caption strip underneath: your name, and one sentence about why you chose it.
4. Read two other captions on the board before you sit down.

For the teacher: Every child on the board once before anyone goes on twice. Keep a class list beside the board and tick names off — it is the only way this stays fair past week three.
