Why AI Will Shape the Future of Teaching and Learning

Artificial intelligence is likely to shape the future of education by helping teachers save time on lesson planning, assessment, marking, and differentiation while giving students additional support outside the classroom. However, AI also brings risks, including inaccurate information, academic misuse, privacy concerns, and unequal access to technology. For AI to improve learning, teachers must remain responsible for checking its accuracy, adapting materials to their students, protecting sensitive information, and deciding when its use is appropriate. The most effective future for AI in education is therefore not one where technology replaces teachers, but one where carefully chosen AI tools reduce routine work and give teachers more time for instruction, relationships, feedback, and individual student support.

Why AI Will Shape the Future of Teaching and Learning

Teachers do not need another technology that creates more work. They need tools that reduce the time spent preparing lessons, creating assessments, and marking routine tasks.

This is where artificial intelligence could make its greatest contribution to education. AI can help teachers complete repetitive work more efficiently while giving students access to explanations and feedback beyond normal class hours.

However, its value will depend on how schools address its weaknesses. AI can produce incorrect information, encourage shortcuts, expose sensitive data, and deepen inequality where internet access is limited. The future of AI in education must therefore remain teacher-led.

AI can give teachers valuable time back

Lesson preparation and marking consume a large part of a teacher’s week.

Research reviewed by Baidoo-Anu and Owusu Ansah provides a useful example. Professor Christian Terwiesch reported that preparing an examination previously took him about 20 hours, with teaching assistants spending another 10 hours testing it. Using ChatGPT reduced that work to approximately 10 hours and five hours respectively.

Teachers can also use generative AI to:

  • Draft lesson objectives and activity ideas
  • Create questions aligned with learning goals
  • Develop rubrics and success criteria
  • Produce formative assessments
  • Adapt materials for different learning needs
  • Generate feedback prompts and exit tickets

The purpose is not to remove the teacher from the process. It is to reduce the amount of time spent starting from a blank page.

What this could look like in a real classroom

Consider a Senior 2 Biology teacher in a Ugandan secondary school preparing a unit on photosynthesis.

Instead of spending an entire evening building the lesson from scratch, the teacher uses EasyLessons to generate a first draft containing learning objectives, classroom activities, differentiation ideas, and an exit ticket.

The teacher reviews the draft, corrects anything that does not fit the curriculum, and adjusts the activities for the students in the class.

Students can receive support beyond class hours

AI could also change how students seek help.

A learner who does not understand a concept can ask for another explanation, request a simpler example, or practise with additional questions. Unlike a classroom teacher working with many students at once, an AI tool can repeat an explanation several times without becoming impatient.

This may be especially helpful for students who:

  • Learn in a second language
  • Need more time to process information
  • Feel uncomfortable asking questions in front of classmates
  • Have gaps in their prior knowledge
  • Need instructions presented in a different way

Voice-enabled tools can also support students who struggle with reading or writing. Learners may be able to listen to an explanation, ask follow-up questions, and progress at a pace that suits them.

Yet access to an explanation is not the same as understanding it. Students still need teachers to identify misconceptions, ask deeper questions, and connect new knowledge to meaningful experiences.

AI’s weaknesses cannot be ignored

AI tools often sound confident even when they are wrong.

Baidoo-Anu and Owusu Ansah found that ChatGPT produced a reference to a conference paper that did not appear to exist. This tendency to invent facts or sources is one reason teachers and students must verify AI-generated information.

Automated quizzes present another limitation. They can efficiently test recall and basic understanding, but they do not automatically measure creativity, reasoning, or critical thinking. A quiz may show whether a student selected the correct answer without revealing how the student reached it.

There are also serious concerns about academic integrity. Students can use generative AI to produce essays and assignments, while AI-detection tools are not reliable enough to provide conclusive evidence of misuse.

Schools may therefore need to place greater emphasis on:

  • Drafts and evidence of the learning process
  • Classroom discussions
  • Oral explanations and defences
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Personal reflection
  • Tasks connected to local experiences

These approaches make student thinking more visible and reduce the temptation to treat a finished written product as the only evidence of learning.

Privacy and unequal access also matter

AI tools collect and process information. If teachers or students enter names, academic records, medical information, or details about learning difficulties, that data could be exposed or used in ways the school did not intend.

Schools need clear guidance about what information may be entered into an AI system. Teachers should avoid sharing personally identifiable or sensitive student data unless the tool has been properly reviewed and approved.

Access is another concern. In schools with unreliable electricity, expensive data, or limited devices, AI could widen existing inequalities. Students with stable internet connections may benefit from personalised assistance while others are left behind.

Any school introducing AI must therefore consider access, safeguarding, and data protection alongside its educational benefits.

Teachers must remain the decision-makers

AI can draft a lesson, but it does not know the students sitting in the classroom.

It does not know that one learner recently joined the school, another is struggling at home, or a third needs instructions broken into smaller steps. It cannot replace the judgment that comes from knowing a class and observing how students respond.

The teacher must still decide:

  • Whether the information is accurate
  • Whether the lesson matches the curriculum
  • Whether the activities are appropriate
  • Whether the assessment measures meaningful learning
  • Whether the content respects the students’ context
  • Whether AI should be used at all

This is why professional development will be essential. Teachers need more than a list of AI tools. They need practical training in prompting, verification, assessment design, data protection, and responsible classroom use.

The future should be teacher-led

AI will shape education because it will force schools to reconsider how teachers prepare, how students receive support, and how learning is assessed.

Its greatest value will not be replacing teachers. It will be helping them spend less time on repetitive preparation and more time doing the work that requires human judgment, care, and presence.

Used responsibly, AI can draft the lesson, suggest the questions, and organise the first version of an assessment. The teacher must still determine whether any of it is suitable for the learners in front of them.

That is the future worth building: not an AI-controlled classroom, but a teacher-led classroom strengthened by carefully chosen technology.
